Having an end of year moment, I thought I’d have a look through our lovely stock of prints, drawings and paintings, to see what we listed this year. The Nine That Haven’t Got Away Yet are my favourite artworks that are still available to buy.

The Mine
by Anthony Currell
Anthony Currell is one of my favourite discoveries, since I began conserving and selling artworks. This etching of a mining village is perhaps his most well-known style, but I also love his later ‘scratchier’ etchings (you can see them on our Anthony Currell page).

Talking of ‘scratchy’ etchings, I love the perspective and detail in this 1953 factory scene. A lesson in how to make an industrial scene into a charming image.

A painting with a little more colour. Nice impressionist style oil on paper, rural scene. There’s a vineyard in there somewhere, I’m sure of it!

Black Sea
by Karl Weschke
The shapes within this print will be familiar to fans of Karl Weschke’s oil paintings. Weschke did not produce many screen prints but most of the ones he did are single colour black ink, like this one.

Dans ce café
by Michael Ayrton
One of a series of images illustrating Femme and Hombres, the second and third in the French poet Paul Verlaine’s nineteenth century erotic trilogy of poetry. The strong influence of impressionists such as Manat, brings back happy memories of my first art history degree. You can read more about this set of etchings in this blog post.

Caesar & Slave

Similar to the etching above, this wood engraving manages to convey the weight of the sculpture and of the relationship and gravitas of the Caesar. Very clever!

Owl
by Iwao Akiyama
One of Iwao Akiyama’s most recognised images is the owl. The Japanese script tells a haiku poem by Taneda Santōka. A wise old owl indeed.

Ivy

And last but not least (expensive), is this still life from Mary Fedden. What a joy! I love the composition of this and the choice of the gold and blue. It’s up on my wall at the moment and I have a definite soft spot for this.
