On the Nile near Luxor is a unique rework of an etching, and was produced in 1999. Egypt had long held a fascination for Karl Weschke, and he was finally able towards the end of his life to visit the country several times. The etchings and paintings that stemmed from these visits capture the essence of the impressions he formed at first hand, this picture characterising the quiet timelessness of the landscape on the banks of the Nile. It is reminiscent of his oil painting The Nile near Kom Ombo, purchased by the Tate in 1994.
