The Young Palm Tree was one of KMW’s last subjects. Following a number of visits to Egypt, he decided to plant this tree in his garden at Cape Cornwall. It was an object for which he clearly felt an affection as well as an affinity in both battling with the elements and the reality of being an outsider. The Young Palm Tree formed the subject of the large oil painting he had almost completed when he died in 2005. The tree is pictured on the cover of the book containing John Le Carré’s eulogy to Karl Weschke.
