Roy Spencer (1918 – 2006) was born in Stamford, in Lincolnshire. He trained as an architect, but joined the army during WWII. He studied at the Chelsea School of Art from 1946 whilst teaching at the Wimbledon School of Art, then taught at Chelsea School of Art into the 1980’s.

He worked as a commercial artist and illustrator for a number of clients (including House and Garden Magazine, Shell and the Bodley Head publishing house. He had solo exhibitions at Trafford Gallery (1950), Bath Festival (1970) and Sally Hunter (1990), and his work was shown at the Royal Academy and the New English Art Club.

This small Nude in a Room, is a Watercolour, Gouache and Pencil on paper. An oil on board by Spencer sold at Christies in 2012 for £450. However, this little drawing/painting is much more modestly priced. Comes in a reconditioned frame suitably matched with a bronze/gold effect on the front and black sides.

There’s a little bit more about Roy Spencer, on the University of York website.
