William T Rawlinson (1912 - 1993)

William Rawlinson (1912 – 1993) trained at Liverpool City School of Art (1929-32) where he first learned wood engraving. After traveling in Europe on an arts scholarship, he joined the School of Art in a teaching post (1934) before becoming Head of Art at the Liverpool Institute.

He joined the Royal Air Force in 1941, becoming, like many of the post war artists we know today, an official war artist in Italy and Tunis. After the war he returned to teaching, and continued to exhibit throughout his life, at the Royal Academy and the Society of Wood Engravers, to which he was elected a member in 1974.
