Anne Hickmott (b.1935)

Anne Hickmott (b.1935) is a graphic designer and established printmaker, based in Brentford, Middlesex. Born in Tunbridge, Kent she studied at Tunbridge School of Art and Crafts, 1951-1955 and Royal College of Art : 1951-1958

Hickmott was a typographer, who worked for BEA, BOAC, BR and various coach companies. She designed book jackets, illustrations, and was also a graphic designer for BBC. She lectured at Regent’s Polytechnic/Poly of Central London/University of Westminster.

Anne was one of the first wave (1945-75) of female British Modernist Graphic Designers, and her images are really stylish. These images have been seen in many places around London, as Hickmott was one of the ‘poster girls’ for the London Underground. The poster girls were a group of women commissioned to design posters to advertise events or attractions in and around the city. In recent years, these designers have been showcased in an exhibition at the London Transport Museum.

Hickmott is a member of the Art Workers Guild, of which she was a trustee 2002 – 2005.
