Suiboku is an East Asian style of ink wash brush painting using black ink in different concentrations to produce the ‘spirit’ of a subject. Mountain landscapes are a common theme for this style of painting. The places are often imaginary or a evocation of traditional beauty spots.

This image had partial material and paper borders. The paper has had previous repairs. It was folded and damaged. I have lightly cleaned the image, and have made paper repairs using light repair paper and wheat paste. I have infilled in coloured watercolour some areas where the surface of the image was missing. I have matted this image using Japanese paper tabs attached using wheat paste, on conservation quality acid free board. It has been framed in a modern but previously used frame to protect the image from further damage.

There are no visible artist makers marks on the image or borders. I don’t know if the image in Chinese or Japanese, although the paper is of considerable age. Estimated to be late 1800s. Sold framed in a reconditioned frame, which shows some marks/wear, but no major damage with modern glass.
