Palle Nielsen (1920 – 2000) was a Danish artist working largely in woodcut and linocut forms. He studied at the Royal Danish academy of fine arts, and became established as a leading graphic artist in the 1950’s, winning an award at the Venice Bienalle in 1958.

His work is in the collections of MoMA, the V&A and the British Museum, as well as many Danish museums.

It is likely this wood block image was conceived as part of the ‘The Soldier and the Child’ series.
