Die Räuber (The Robbers)

Collection only.

1968, Horst Janssen

Edition Number: N/A

Supplied mounted and framed

Horst Janssen (1929 – 1995) was a German printmaker, poster artist and illustrator. In 1968, the year this poster was created, Horst Janssen the Grand Prize in graphic art at the 34th Venice Biennale. Janssen was awarded the Biermann Ratjen Medal in 1978 (the year it was founded), which is an award given by Hamburg for outstanding contributions to the culture of that city. He was also awarded the 1975 Schiller Prize of the City of Mannheim.

In 1778 Germany’s first National Theatre opened in Mannheim, and in 1782 it gave the first performance of Friedrich Schiller’s play Die Räuber (The Robbers).

In Oldenburg, Germany, there is a museum named after Horst Janssen which is dedicated to fine art on paper, and which holds and exhibits a major collection of his work. As an individual, he was known for his womanising and alcoholism, but his work is held in great esteem and is shown internationally. Janssen was widely acclaimed as an artist during his lifetime.

This poster brings all of these elements (apart from the womanising and alcoholism) together. It is a fantastic image, and is an advert for a performance of Friedrich Schiller’s play Die Räuber in 1968 at the Hamburg Schauspielhaus. It is initialled and dated by Horst Janssen in pencil, bottom right of the image. I have framed it in a fantastic painted wooden frame of the same age. Due to the size and weight this item is collection only from our Portland HQ unless courier arrangements are made by the purchaser.
