A beautiful linocut from Penny Berry Paterson (1941 – 2021). Penny specialised in limited editions of her original prints, often depicting colourful images inspired by coastal and nautical themes, and other landscapes. She produced mainly relief prints, using lino, card and wood.

These Bank Top kilns are within the North York Moors National Park and are part of a conservation project run by the park authority. According to the project notes, “The kilns were built to refine the ironstone through a process called ‘calcining’ – burning the ore with coal to reduce its weight by up to half and remove impurities. This meant much more efficient transport costs in getting to the ore to where it would be smelted into iron – first around Durham and later Teesside.”
