Bernard Rice (1900-1998)
Bernard Rice (1900-1998) was born in Innsbruck, Austria were he studied wood engraving at art school. At the age of 19 he came to London to study at Westminster School of Art and Royal Academy Schools. From 1922-1926 Rice lived in Bosnia. He returned to London in 1926 to study at the Royal College of Art. After marrying in 1927, he returned to Bosnia.
Rice spent ten years living in Cairo where he taught engraving and etching techniques. He experimented with different woods and ways in which to carve the blocks to evolve his technique. His best known works are the large and vigorous woodcuts based on the landscapes and villages of Bosnia.
