One of Iwao Akiyama’s most recognised images is the owl. The Japanese script tells a haiku poem by Taneda Santōka. His poems, like Akiyama’s prints, often feature owls. It is titled As an owl under the tilted moon. It depicts an owl hooting under the tilted moon. This passage exudes the quietness and mysterious atmosphere of the night. You hear a distant call of an owl in this tranquil setting. The moment captures a sense of serene beauty and the quiet presence of nature. Santōka regularly drew inspiration from such simple yet profound experiences during his travels.
