1917, William Lee-Hankey

One of an edition of 50, this is one of Lee-Hankey’s rarer prints, on rich cream wove paper.

Signed and titled in pencil, with the artist’s blindstamp. Archive number stamp: 2984

William Lee Hankey (1869–1952) was a British Painter specialising in scenes of pastoral life. Influenced by Jules Bastien-Lepage, he favoured social realism. He spent much of his time in France, especially at the Étaples art colony, where he had a studio. He was a painter, but is most well known for his figurative drypoint etching prints depicting the people of Étaples.

In Britain he was connected with the Newlyn School in Cornwall, which later became the heart of the modern art movement in Britain.

This etching had been damaged, and has undergone some conservation and repair work. There are two holes and a tear in the paper to the top left of the image. These had undergone previous repair work. The original repair has been removed, and the holes infilled using a florentine paper repair method, and the tear repaired using lens tissue paper. There is some retouching of the image. The repair is visible, but does not detract from the overall impression of the image, which is striking.

It is of a young lady standing in a field with most likely Étaples in the background.
It has been framed in conservation standard mount and backing in a frame of similar age. The original glass (showing glass ripples) has been retained, as it looks great with the image, but is slightly scratched.

Availability: In stock

The frame is restored and as such has some imperfections. There are some small marks in the vintage glass, however, it is in good overall condition and ready to hang.
